Weeki Wachee

Adagio Sculpture, Weeki Wachee, Florida

One of my favorite places in America, Weeki Wachee, Florida--the only city of live mermaids! Here we see the adagio sculpture which stands out in front of the park. The sculpture shows two women in the adagio pose, usually performed at the end of each performance of the mermaids.

I got to go to Weeki Wachee last week. What a thrill! Of course, I had been there before and am even working on a documentary of it (see sidebar). But I always enjoy going there. It is so unique.

For over 60 years, women perform their entire show underwater by breathing from air hoses. Whether wearing a mermaid tail or simply in bikinis, the women amaze you with their breath control and "dance" moves. If you have never been, what are you waiting for? Get down there and enjoy!

We used to have mermaids, mermen and underwater clowsn in San Marcos. It was called Aquarena Springs and it was one of the first theme parks. There was even a swimming pig.

I am glad to know the tradition continues in Florida. I cannot wait for your film.

Weeki Wachee and the Buccaneer Bay Water Park were a part of my boys summer schedule every year when they were younger. Oh, how I miss those fun trips!
