On the way to Virginia this weekend, I saw this little guy in Maryland. Usually, a fire hydrant will have a flag on top in order to protect it in case of heavy snowfall. This one has the flag to the side, so it looks like he is protesting or advertising something by holding up his flag. It struck me funny, but that's just me. ;]

I never heard of flagging a fire hydrant -- not even in Idaho where we used to have deep snows in winter. To me the flag on the side makes sense because it is harder to slip off than on the top. . . JMTC
They put flags on hydrants so in the winter, firefighters can find them easier.
