Daytime Times Square

2Y232

A view of Times Square looking south...The pole you see above the Discover Card ad (above the "o" in "Discover") will hold the ball on New Year's Eve. Yes, that building which looks like a tower of ads is One Times Square.

Oscar® Moment

2Y226

I usually enjoy awards shows, especially the Academy Awards--the grandaddy of all awards shows. Well, at the ABC studio in Times Square, they have had on display a bunch of Oscars® which, of course, you can see through the windows. Yes, that's right, the big Academy Awards show will be on ABC tonight.

2Y227

Saturday, you could go inside to get a much closer view of the little fella.

2Y228

And, yes, if you waited in line, or as they say here, "on line", you could even have your own "Oscar® Moment". [Notice the leash on the award?]

for George

2Y223

Happy Birthday, George Washington! How timeless you remain, yet, with your skills in guerrilla warfare and nation building, you would fit right into our needs today.

Driggs Melt

2Y221

As I was saying, the little bit of snow we got recently has hung around for a while. We only got an inch or so. But with the low temperatures this past week, the little bit lingers. Here we see the daily melt at the corner of Manhattan and Driggs Avenues in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Little Man Goes On

As the little man walks in the late late afternoon shadows, a song goes through his mind:

"There must be some mistake,
I never meant to let them take,
Away my soul.
Am I too old?
Is it too late?

Where has the feeling gone?
Will I remember this song?
The show must go on."

Composition With 3 Dots

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.

Graffiti Melt

The little bit of snow we received a few days ago melts in the mid day sun. It has been able to hang around due to temperatures below freezing.

Little Hero

The little man returns to Broadway in lower Manhattan and recalls the history of parades through this Canyon of Heroes. As the day's last burst of light hits the buildings, he remembers that the last big parade was for the Yankees in celebration of their winning the World Series in 2000 over the city's other baseball team, the Mets.

Slushy Sidewalk

We got an inch or so of snow today. Here we see slush coating the sidewalks of Broadway in lower Manhattan. Over the years, this part of Broadway has hosted many of the famous ticker tape parades which then gave it the nickname "the Canyon of Heroes". As you walk along the street, you will see on the sidewalk the dates and honorees of the various parades.

Details & Flickr.com

I love New York City's infinite variety of details. No matter how long you stay here, you always find something you hadn't noticed before. The beauty is in the details and the fun is to find them.

A funny thing happened along the way to the new Blogger®: they changed the image uploading. Blogger® now limits image size by embedding a 400 pixel width into the image URL. At some point, maybe I or someone else will figure out how to "do it like we used to". Until then, thank God for Flickr.com, through which I can still show my photos at the "normal" size.

Owl & Bat

Sometimes you see animals in the city and sometimes you see animals in the city by way of sculpture. Here you see a detail from one of the ornate staircases at Bethesda Terrace in Central Park.

Though easily overlooked on your way to see the big fountain below, the staircases et cetera definitely rate some looking time as well. So much to see and so little time!

Sidewalk Tree

"Lord, the air smells good today,
straight from the mysteries
within the inner courts of God.
A grace like new clothes thrown
across the garden, free medicine for everybody.
The trees in their prayer, the birds in praise,
the first blue violets kneeling.
Whatever came from Being is caught up in being, drunkenly
forgetting the way back."

Statcounter.com

Thank God for Statcounter.com! A funny thing happened yesterday over at BlogExplosion.com's Battle of the Blogs. Everything seemed normal as I put up a "challenge". No one took the battle right away, so I surfed to other sites.

After half an hour or so, I went back to see that not only had I been taken but there was only a couple votes remaining. Of course! It was #2 All Time "shallowmike" who had taken the "challenge". We all know his alleged reputation for "helping" the vote along, so I checked over at my statcounter.com account. Sure enough, the screenshots tell the tale. [click for larger image]

Well, you guessed it, he "won". The little fella must have gotten tired from voting so much.

Interesting to note the previous battles for each:

I guess "shallowmike" feels the pressure from contenders coming up behind him in the rankings and doesn't trust the "quality" of his posts to earn votes. Thank you, statcounter.com, for making it so easy to catch such blatant mischief.
