End Of A Year

self in lights

Here is one of my favorite photos from the previous year, "Gnome in Lights", published January 28th, 2008. I hope you didn't mind the little break I took the last two+ weeks, since I am visiting family out of NYC and it just sort of happened.

I wonder what photos of mine you liked, if any, this year? May your next 365 days be really, really, really great and keep visiting New York Nitty-Gritty. Thanks for coming!

Happy New Year!

Be careful, when parking under trees. Things could have been worse...this could have been MY car. ;]

Please, could you go to this site and make witty comments on the photo there? It's a photo of a bird with some alligators. I'm sure you can come up with something funny.

Sunset Incident

sunset light at incident angle to the camera, Hudson River, Manhattan, NYC

From the banks of the mighty Hudson River, late afternoon light reflects off buildings of lower Manhattan at an incident angle to the camera.

EXTRA: I looked at last November's photos (2007) and found an interesting one from Kasaan Bay, Alaska to compare to the one for today. Oh, if you click the link, once there, you will need to scroll for the sunset photo. Yes, you will recognize it.

So, I caught this horrible cold a few days ago and finally resorted to using the Robitussin®. Hey, the stuff works pretty well. Anyway, I sort of forgot about posting here for a couple days. Getting sick sucks!

Obama Wins!

the little man's Times Square view of Barack Obama's election victory

The little man walked in Times Square Tuesday night to find out that Barack Obama has become our President-Elect. Thousands of people cheered the large screen. The most unlikely of candidates has won the election and shown the best of the United States of America. Hope has beaten fear, ability beat cynicism, and we are all the better for it.

New Era

Tommy Ervin, park manager, and two mermaids at Weeki Wachee Springs, Florida

On November 1st, Weeki Wachee Springs became a Florida state park. Here, Tommy Ervin, inaugural park manager, and two current mermaids take part in a weekend jazz fest held at the park.

I wish Mr. Ervin all the best in his future efforts and look forward to visiting Weeki Wachee for decades to come.

A bald eagle rests in a pine tree above the Weeki Wachee River in Florida. You might notice the "Spanish Moss" hanging on the limbs of the tree as well, which isn't Spanish nor is it moss. It's an air plant related to the orchid.

Adagio Sculpture

the adagio sculpture at Weeki Wachee Springs, Florida

I don't know where the sun in "The Sunshine State" has gone. Anyway, I still managed to enjoy this sculpture outside the entrance of Weeki Wachee Springs, the home of live mermaids. The figures are shown in the adagio pose, a signature move performed in each mermaid show.

Coming in from the Gulf of Mexico, a boat heads into the mouth of the Weeki Wachee River during sunset. No, this is not in New York City but going to Florida is "very NYC"...and when I go on vacation, so do you. Enjoy!
