Times Square

Times Square buildings

The pole on the right would have the ball later but I am in Times Square around 2 PM on New Year's Eve. A beautiful day in NYC...

Power Shadow

shadow on residential building

"The light of memory, or rather the light that memory lends to things, is the palest light of all...I am not quite sure whether I am dreaming or remembering, whether I have lived my life or dreamed it. Just as dreams do, memory makes me profoundly aware of the unreality, the evanescence of the world, a fleeting image in the moving water."

Pier Ruins

You might remember this view from a previous photo. On a beautiful Christmas Day, I walked over there again. The changing level of the Hudson River adds some drama to the pier ruins.

Decorated Canyon

decorated canyon, Manhattan

Of course, NYC has some pretty elaborate Christmas decorations, especially in Manhattan (scroll down). But I enjoy the simple efforts, as well, like this one on Broadway--a little something to decorate the streetlights.

Meat Man

meat vendor, Manhattan

Tis the season for...meat! Well, sure, you can get this practically any day here but what could be better on a cold, people-everywhere-you-look evening than meat on a stick? Mmmm, mmmm! Smell that smoky goodness!

What the heck, go for it and have two.

An only child alone and wild, a cabinet maker's son
His hands were meant for different work
And his heart was known to none

He left his home and went his lone and solitary way
And he gave to me a gift I know I never can repay

Last night, I happened to catch the little man walking on 42nd Street. What was he up to? Hard to say...the "jury" is still out.

no skaters at Rockefeller Center

What's wrong here? No skaters! Nobody gets to skate in the rain, even if they want to at Rockefeller Center. I wanted a nice, snow-falling-on-the-skaters-and-tree shot but, NOOOOO, we got rain instead of the predicted, big, bad, snow storm. Oh, well, stay tuned and, one of these days, you will see "better" photos of this landmark.

As the title says, this is post number 1,000 here at New York Nitty-Gritty. Thanks for continuing to visit. I like your comments, too, so keep 'em coming.

A not-so-subtle message to the hipsters and wannabes (same thing?) of Greenpoint and Williamsburg, Brooklyn...you know who you are. To be sure, the writer only means the best for you.

New Warsaw

New Warsaw Bakery, Greenpoint, Brooklyn

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas around the New Warsaw Bakery in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. As you might guess from the sign, this is a Polish neighborhood with great things to discover in the local shops. You know, Polish stuff. You can even use Polish on the ATM's.

Though the weather looks like it might want to snow, we haven't had any yet.

Nipper still stands on top of the old RCA building, now a storage company, in Albany, NY.

He has a light on one ear, since, back in the day, he used to be one of the tallest objects making up the Albany skyline. No one would want to see a plane crash into ol' Nipper.

Red and frost on a dock in Ketchikan, Alaska (Thomas Basin-ish for you "in the know" types)...

I had such a great trip to Alaska this November. If you remember, I also went in July, so, this year I had two great trips back home. A true blessing indeed!

Regular programming returns tomorrow. I hear the little man might show up, even. ;]

Rigging

boat rigging, Ketchikan, Alaska

Here's an encore: we see the morning moon and the snow-capped hills on Gravina Island (across from Ketchikan) through the rigging of a local boat. Be careful when visiting Ketchikan, Alaska on a nice day like in the photo. You may want to move there, forgetting about the 13 feet of rain that falls on it every year.

Ketchikan, Alaska--I woke to morning frost with Deer Mountain in the background, as I packed my gear. Yes, the Alaska trip has come to an end.

Thanks for continuing to view New York Nitty-Gritty in spite of the Alaska photos. Not immediately but soon, we shall return to regular programming.
